Mark Winter

Co-founder and Chief Executive


Mark spent many years in the banking sector undertaking various structured finance and treasury roles. He was also the founder of MDW Rail Freight, which undertook locomotive leasing and brokering. Mark left the city at the end of 2013 to concentrate on setting up UK Rail Leasing. Assuming the role of Chief Executive, Mark secured our mainline connected depot in the heart of Leicester.

Kristian Mengel

Co-founder and Finance Director


Kristian has a background in investment banking and spent 15 years working in the City of London, most recently as a Director in Fixed Income at Citigroup. Since leaving Citigroup in 2014, Kristian has been involved in several start-up businesses and acquisitions in addition to his role with UKRL. He holds a MSc in Economics from the University of Southern Denmark.

Alan Lee

Professional Head of Engineering and Safety


Alan has over 25 years’ experience managing, developing and leading large multi-disciplined teams in the rail industry. In addition to his role at UKRL, Alan is currently the Head of Safety, Traction & Rolling Stock, at DC Rail and is a consultant for Network Rail. Previous key roles include Director of Operations at LNWR, Area Manager for Fleet Virgin Cross Country/West Coast and is business trouble-shooter for Bombardier Transportation.

Gareth Broughton

General Manager


Gareth joined UKRL in 2014, first as Head of Production and since 2015 as General Manager, taking responsibility for the daily running of UKRL’s Leicester Depot and overseeing all technical documentation. He has a background in elevator/escalator engineering, having held various technical and management positions with KONE and OTIS. Gareth has been involved in rail vehicle engineering on private railways for a number of years.
