UKRL’s engineering services enjoy consistent growth in 2016

2016 was a landmark year for UK Rail Leasing’s rail engineering services.

We took great pleasure in out shopping Europhoenix Class 37 – 37800 – following an extensive re-build from near scrapping condition. The locomotive returned to the mainline in June joining classmate 37884 hauling new train deliveries for the Rail Operations Group. Both locomotives are maintained at UKRL’s Leicester TMD.

We won a significant component overhaul contract for locomotive brake cylinders from a leading freight train operator. The overhaul process was written in-house, based on working drawings and is fully documented and process controlled.

We were also awarded a contract to overhaul Class 37 locomotive bogies. The overhaul includes back to metal shot blasting, non-destructive testing with fabrication and weld repairs, where required.

In August, we won the contract to maintain the Rail Operations Group’s newly acquired Class 47 locomotives. This new business in addition to on-going projects highlighted the need to expand our covered workshop space. Our shed has one pitted road that can accommodate two locomotives. In late autumn, we extended the shed to cover the side road, giving us the ability to work on four locomotives simultaneously. The second covered road is ideal for body repairs and will be used as a paint shop.

UKRL offers a range of component overhaul services, from small items such as fuel injectors and compressors all the way through to full re-build of diesel engines.

All our overhaul services are provided with full documentation as agreed with the client, to ensure the product meets all relevant standards.

  • Traction motor swaps
  • Bogie repairs and wheel bearing replacements/wheel replacement
  • Brake system overhaul and maintenance including an in-house brake and air valve testing facility
  • Our specialist in-house power unit engineers undertake diesel engine fault diagnosis and repair
  • Pneumatic/hydraulic repairs.
